Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) and Utah State University (USU) have partnered to offer an International Economics undergraduate program. This program aims to provide students with a strong foundation in economics and international trade, as well as an appreciation of cross-cultural differences in business practices. As with all degree programs, there are specific requirements for admission, including English language proficiency.
The International Economics program is taught entirely in English, thus, all applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in the language. BIT-USU accepts a range of English language proficiency tests including TOEFL, IELTS, and Cambridge English exams. Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 80 on the TOEFL iBT exam, 6.5 on the IELTS exam, or grade C on the Cambridge English: Advanced exam. Students who have completed their high school education in a country where the official language is English, or who have completed at least one year of academic study at an institution where English is the language of instruction, are exempt from this requirement.
The TOEFL exam is one of the most widely recognized English language proficiency tests. It assesses four language skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The reading and listening sections contain multiple-choice questions, while the speaking and writing sections require test-takers to respond to prompts orally and in written form, respectively. The TOEFL iBT is the most common format accepted by universities and requires a reliable internet connection.
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assesses the English language proficiency of non-native speakers. The test contains four sections: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. It takes around 3 hours to complete and is scored on a scale of 1-9. The IELTS exam is available in two formats: Academic and General Training. The Academic version is suitable for applicants seeking education abroad.
The Cambridge English: Advanced exam is an internationally recognized English language qualification developed by Cambridge Assessment English. The exam consists of four sections: reading and use of English, writing, listening, and speaking. The reading and use of English and writing sections are combined, and the exam takes around 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete. It is scored on a scale of 160-210.
To study International Economics at BIT-USU, applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English. This requirement can be met through a range of English language proficiency exams including the TOEFL iBT, IELTS, and Cambridge English: Advanced. Achieving a high score in one of these exams will ensure that applicants are prepared for academic study in an English-speaking environment.
